Abstract

Nigeria could boast of at least six functioning dry cell manufacturing industries. Unfortunately, today, these industries have gone into oblivion with only one trying, epileptically, to survive. One major factor responsible for this is the higher cost of production than the sales price of imported ready-made cells. This, in turn, is due to almost zero local material content of Nigeria-made cells. This paper therefore addresses the issues of raw materials required to produce Zn-C dry cell and the level of availability of such materials in Nigeria. In addition, Uganda presents a relevant parallel, albeit at a smaller industrial scale. Official mineral-occurrence sources indicate lead-zinc, graphite and other industrial minerals in several Ugandan districts, while current national planning emphasizes value addition, industrialization and environmental sustainability. Uganda’s e-waste framework, including policy, guidelines, EPR-oriented provisions and collection infrastructure, strengthens the regional relevance of this study by showing that battery-material development in Africa must link mineral endowment with downstream processing and safe end-of-life management. Strategies of improving the local raw materials content of the dry cells are also explored in both countries. Furthermore, key components and the toxic materials have been explained and finally survey of some other countries on the use of Zinc dry battery have been explained.
